The society in House of Night differs in that certain teenagers carry a unique strand of DNA that, when triggered, change them into vampires during adolescence. Once a teenager learns that she is going to transform into a vampire, she must attend the House of Night boarding school. A common theme explored in the series is religion, namely pagan and Native American inspired belief systems.
The first book of the series, Marked, begins with Zoey Redbird who has just become a vampire and must attend the House of Night boarding school. When first marked with the transformation, these teens are called “fledglings.” The circle of friends Zoey is in includes Damien, Stevie Rae, Erin and Shaunee.
The story continues with the challenges Zoey faces as she transforms. She is invited to the Dark Daughters Full Moon ritual by the High Priestess Aphrodite. Here, Zoey begins to understand what blood-lust is and later learns that she can control the five elements of nature. Zoey has more supernatural powers than the average fledgling which makes her more special.
By the end of the first book, Aphrodite loses her title as the High Priestess and leader of the Dark Daughters. The title is then transferred to Zoey. There are currently eight novels that chronicle the life of Zoey as a vampire. It is said that four more are to be written.
