Thirsty by M.T. Anderson
Thirsty, by M.T. Anderson, is a novel that takes the classical vampire story, sets it in modern times and combines it with the challenges of adolescence. The target audience for this horror novel is largely pre-teens and teens. The novel has been quite a success for M.T. Anderson, especially with the Twilight Saga in the background.
The story is set in Massachusetts where vampires and other demons coexist. Aside from the roller coaster of adolescence, Christopher must battle with the vampire within him. At the same time, he is fighting for a normal life and the opportunity to date Rebecca Schwartz.
Early on in the novel, Christopher comes across the lynching of vampires. After witnessing the horrific sight, Chris begins to thirst blood. One day, Chris looks into a reservoir for water and does not see his reflection. It becomes clear that Chris has vampire blood in him and cannot disclose the information to anyone as he will be risking his life.
As Chris begins to hit puberty, he also begins to grow as a vampire. In the novel, Chris is also met by Chet, a Celestial being who claims that he can cure Chris’ vampirism. Thirsty follows the challenges Chris must face, including fighting supernatural beings and living a “normal” life.
