Vampire: The Masquerade
Vampire: The Masquerade is the first of the World of Darkness role-playing games. The game was developed by Mark Rein-Hagen and is based on the Storyteller System. This game is all about vampires who roam a modern day punk world.
The concept of the game is centered on morality, depravity and the human condition. The game takes up the idea of the condition of the Vampire, which is seen as a curse, to another level.
The characters must battle against mortals and supernatural demons. In the meantime, they must look within to battle their own self and sanity. While being challenged with the true nature of vampires, who are treacherous and violent creatures, the characters must always try to survive.
Vampire: The Masquerade contains many biblical references including the Cainites, who have been transformed into vampires through a curse that originated with “Caine.” In the game, players are members of certain levels, either “sects” or “clans.” Each vampire is part of a specific clan or bloodline, each one with unique powers and curses.
This is the ideal role-playing game for vampire enthusiasts and has won an award for Best Roleplaying Rules of 1991. Unfortunately, Vampire: The Masquerade was discontinued in 2004, but a revised version called Vampire: The Requiem was introduced later.
