Vampire Bats

Vampire bats are bats that feast on non-human blood in order to survive. Three species of these bats exist: the Common Vampire Bat, the Hairy-legged Vampire bat, and the White-winged Vampire Bat. They live in very dark locations, such as caves, buildings and hollow trees. It is not easy for them to find host organisms to feed on, but in order to survive, they must feed on blood at least once every few days. Vampire bats only feed when it is very dark, and they release sound pulses. They have unique digestive systems which accommodate their diet, which consists of only liquid. The vampire bats are native to the Americas in many locations, including South America and Mexico as well. They are in the subfamily Desmodontinae, but each type of vampire bat is in a different genera. Although many people believe that vampire bats feast on human blood, this is a myth, for they do not like the taste of human blood, and prefer to feast on the blood of other animals. If they cannot find blood, they undergo a process called “transfusion”, where one vampire bat exchanges blood to another via mouth, so that the other can survive until it finds blood again.
